Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery

The Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery, located 7 miles north of Little Falls, opened in June, 1994. The cemetery was originally established through the efforts of many individuals and veteran organizations. Today the cemetery is operated by the State of Minnesota through the Minnesota Deptartment of Veterans Affairs, and is now the final resting place for over 1,500 veterans and their eligible family members.

Hours of Operation ...
Grounds: Daylight Hours, 7 days per week.
Office: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday (closed on State Holidays)

Eligibility ...
The Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery follows the same eligibility requirements as the National Cemetery Administration. Burial is open to all veterans discharged from active military service under conditions other than dishonorable. Their spouses, minor children, and under certain conditions, unmarried adult children are also eligible for burial. Eligible spouses may be buried, even if they predecease the veteran.

Also eligible for burial are members of the reserve components of the Armed Forces, the Army and National Guard, and the Reserve Officer Training Corps who die while on active duty for training or performing service, or who have 20 years of service in reserve components of the Armed Forces creditable for retired pay.

Gravesites ...
    Next available, no pre-selection

Headstones are standard government upright granite

Gravesites are maintained by cemetery personnel

Lawn Crypts/Graveliners/Vaults ...
Effective November 1, 2003, a pre-placed graveliner (lawn crypt) will be provided by the cemetery for all casket burials in sections 10, 11 and 12. Assignment of gravesites in sections 10, 11 and 12 will be based on a first come, first served basis.

All burials in section 1 will require a graveliner/vault which will need to be purchased through the chosen funeral director. Section 1 is the only casket burial section which has been used since the cemetery opened in June, 1994.

After November 1, 2003, section 1 will only be used for the interment of individuals with spouses already buried at the cemetery or for individuals who choose to purchase a sealed vault from their chosen funeral director.

Columbarium Niches ...
There are two options for the placement of cremated remains at the cemetery. We have constructed over 1,000 above-ground columbarium niches for cremated remains. We will also continue to provide in-ground burial of cremated remains. The choice for the placement of cremated remains either in-ground or above-ground will need to be determined by the next-of-kin.

Fees for Spouses and Eligible Dependents ...
$300 in-ground burial of cremated remains (effective 9/1/03)

$400 above-ground placement of cremated remains in columbarium niche (effective 9/1/03)

    $750 casket burial (effective 11/1/03)

$250 casket burial if the veteran was buried in the cemetery prior to November 1, 2003

Fees for spouse/eligible dependents cannot be prepaid and are subject to change. Contact the cemetery for specific rules and regulations regarding the fee schedule.

Pre-Registration ...
Pre-registration assures your eligibility in advance and eliminates delays in providing military documents to the cemetery.

Military Honors ...
Honor guard, clergy services and other arrangements are the responsibility of the family or family representative. These arrangements are normally coordinated through your chosen funeral director.

Committal Services

The cemetery can do four services per day on a first-come, first-served basis. Times:
    9:30 a.m. - 10:15 a.m.
    11:00 a.m. - 11:45 a.m.
    12:30 p.m. - 1:15 p.m.
    2:00 p.m. - 2:45 p.m.

No services are allowed to start after 2:45 p.m. All interments are made immediately after the committal service.

All committal services at the Minnesota State Veterans Cemetery are held in our committal service building. The committal service building does not have formal seating and can accommodate approximately 100 people. We can provide a limited number of chairs for individuals who cannot stand during a committal service. The funeral director should be asked to request chairs, if needed.

Committal services are the only type of service we accommodate in the committal service building. The intended purpose of the committal service building is to provide a safe, comfortable gathering space, away from gravesites, for a brief committal service and military honors if the family has arranged for military honors.

Services such as funeral services or memorial services are not allowed in the committal service building. The chapel on the grounds of nearby Camp Ripley is available for services such as funeral services and memorial services and can be reserved by calling (320) 632-7757.

Minnesota National Guard ... Honor Guard

The Honor Guard provides Military Funeral Honors within the State of Minnesota for honorably discharged veterans of the Armed Forces of the United States of America. The rendering of Military Funeral Honors is a way to show the nation's deep gratitude to those who have faithfully defended our country in times of war and peace. The ceremonial paying of respect is the final demonstration that a grateful nation can provide to a veteran's family.

Military Funeral Honors

To request Military Funeral Honors, contact ...
    Minnesota Military Funeral Honors
    Veterans Service Building
    20 West 12th Street
    Saint Paul, MN 55155

    State Coordinator's Office ... 651-282-4570

You will need the following information ...
    Deceased Name
    Urn or Casket
    Date and Time of Service
    Social Security/Service Number
    Rank and Branch of Service
    Cemetary Name and Address
Point of Contact Name and Number
    Next of Kin

The basic Military Funeral Honors (MFH) ceremony consists of the folding and presentation of the United States flag to the veteran's family and the playing of Taps. The ceremony is performed by a funeral honors detail consisting of at least two members of the Armed Forces.

The Funeral Honors rendered to you or your veteran will be determined by the status of the veteran. The type of Funeral Honors may be ...
    - Full Military Honors
    - 7 Person Detail
    - Standard Honors Team Detail

When possible, at least one member of the funeral honors detail will be from the Armed Force in which the deceased veteran served. Taps may be played by a bugler or, if a bugler is not available, by using a quality recorded version. Military Funeral Honor Teams may act as Pall Bearers if requested by the veteran/family.

To obtain funeral honors as a veteran or a family member of a veteran, you must have a copy of the Certificate of Release or Discharge from Active Duty, Department of Defense Form 214 (discharge paperwork). This documentation should be given to the funeral home you have selected. The funeral home will contact the Casualty Area Command (CAC) (1-800-350-7746) that handles your respective state for reporting purposes. The funeral director will then contact a Military Funeral Honors Program Area Coordinator who will assign your service to one of the local Honor Guard details.

Bronze Star Markers

The Minnesota Department of Veterans Affairs offers Bronze Stars to mark the gravesite of any veteran buried in the state, where permitted. Bronze Star Markers are available through your local county veterans service officer.
