Follow Me, Brother
by Jeff Seeber
An old Veteran hears a voice coming from a deep, dark, black pit and he walks over to the edge to check it out. He looks down into the abyss and sees a young Veteran, obviously distraught, looking up at him.
"Why are you down there?", the old guy asks.
The young guy answers, "I think I've reached the end. Too many demons. I've seen too much I can't forget. I had to do things that keep me awake all of the time, all night, every night. I've seen my buddies die. I'm alive and they're dead. None of it makes any sense. I'm tired of dealing with it. Didn't you ever feel like this?"
"Yes, I did. Sometimes I still do. I had friends who helped me get through it. I have friends now who help me. Some of them are my age and some of them are your age. I'm back there in hell every night just like you are, but ...".
Before he finishes the sentence, the old Vet suddenly jumps down into the pit. The young guy yells, "Why did you come down here with me??? Now, we're both screwed!!!"
The old guy says, "Not so. Like I was saying, I'm back there in hell every night just like you are, but now I know the way out. Follow me, brother."

I wrote this in 2004 during an e-mail exchange with an Iraq Veteran. I still use it when it's appropriate. If anyone wants to save it in case it comes in handy for you to use at some time, please feel free to do so.
