Breathing Author wishes to remain anonymous
In the dark I awaken, listening as soft silence grows jagged; another will die, yet again.
You're in the steamy wasteland silent, still, waiting until he shows himself.
Steady breathing in measured intervals but no sound sleep; you are waiting, sensing, anticipating.
Body relaxed and ready against mine, rock-solid we are smothered in a ghillie suit, sweating as seconds become minutes and hours.
Your mind in deep sleep with hand wide awake perched on my shoulder, at the ready.
Breathing in, out, motionless calm without peace exhaling, pausing each time
waiting
waiting, and finally
steady pull of calloused finger against my skin. We inhale, exhale, with satisfaction at another death in Quang Tri.
As I breathe in cadence with you the shot echoes in your dreams and somehow, in mine.
Tonight's mission is complete and now we are at rest breathing in rhythm, deeply, together
